The beginning of November ushers in the week-long Abissa Festival in Grand Bassam, on the beaches near Abidjan in Cote d’ Ivoire. Locals paint their faces and wear costumes while poking fun at each other and visitors alike. During the Abissa, husbands and wives get rid of their pent-up aggressions against each other by cross-dressing and publicly making fun of each other. The Abissa is said to represent part of the origins of Caribbean carnivals, the idea having been taken from this area by slaves who were shipped to the New World.
